“In days of old when knights were bold. . . ” goes the ditty in our heads. We envision a man whose face is a mystery, totally encased in shiny metal armor. When we trim that ditty down to the real nitty-gritty, we discover that there were a few key elements to medieval armor from early on. Helmets evolved, from the pointed cone-shaped helmets worn at the Battle of Hastings in 1066 A.D., to curved helmets produced around 1270 A.D., to flat-topped helmets and eventually to open-faced helmets, allowing knights a bit more freedom.
